Obtaining An International Driving Permit

The IDP is a special license which allows motorists to drive internationally, when accompanied by a valid driver's license from their country.

CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) is the only organization in Canada authorized to issue an International Driving Permit.

Where is the CAA IDP valid?

In all the countries that signed the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. In addition, many other countries which are not signatories to the Convention recognize the IDP and accept it in their territories.

*IDP's issued by CAA are only valid outside North America.*

How do I obtain one?

Print the application form, complete it and submit it to your local CAA Club. See the following drop box.

IDP Requirements

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years of age
  • Photocopy (front and back) of a valid Canadian driver's license
  • Two passport type photos (available at any BCAA office)
  • Pay the $15 fee

*An IDP is only valid for one year from the date of issue. You complete a new application if another IDP is required.*
